Tokyo-based, personally hosted. David plans and leads every journey himself, with Chieko coordinating on the ground in Thailand and Mirei coordinating on the ground in Tokyo.
David Wright
David is the founder of Cultural Connections Asia and personally designs and hosts every journey. More than thirty years across Asia, and over twenty years based in Tokyo. It began with a Yale-in-China posting in Hong Kong — the start of a lasting connection to Asia.
Places guidebooks don't cover, relationships built over decades with the people on the ground, and a scholar's eye for cultural depth — that's the core of every Cultural Connections Asia journey.
From your first inquiry through departure, David is who you'll be talking to.
As a student at Yale, David joined Yale-in-China, one of America's oldest academic exchange programs — where his relationship with Asia began.
Partnered with academic institutions in Hong Kong. Two years that shaped a deep cultural and linguistic understanding of the region — Asia as a place to live, not just visit.
After Hong Kong, David traveled widely through Japan, Thailand, and Southeast Asia — not as a tourist, but as a scholar and a resident, engaging with the region directly.
Tokyo became home, and remains so today. David learned Japanese and became deeply woven into Japanese life. Doctoral research at UC Berkeley (American History) brought a historian's lens to how every journey is designed.
In 2015, David founded Cultural Connections Asia LLC, building on more than a decade of arranging journeys informally for friends and opening that same access to more travelers. Since then, CCA has hosted guests from six continents.
"Don't just see a place — understand it. That's what a journey with Cultural Connections Asia means."
Traveling with a host who knows the ground gives you back the freedom to focus on the experience itself, not the logistics. Every itinerary is built around that idea.
Chieko coordinates the Thailand side of every journey — bookings, restaurant reservations, and hotel correspondence in Bangkok — so nothing gets lost along the way.
David leads the on-the-ground experience; Chieko handles the coordination behind it, from initial planning through your return home.
Chieko looks past the surface polish of a place to judge whether it's genuinely comfortable, and shapes every recommendation around that distinction.
If anything unexpected comes up during your trip in Thailand, Chieko is there to help coordinate with local staff and any other contacts you need.

Mirei coordinates the Tokyo side of every journey — hotel logistics, restaurant reservations, and the small adjustments that come up along the way.
She brings an academic background from UC Berkeley and translates for the Asahi Shimbun, one of Japan's leading newspapers — the same precision and fluency she brings to every itinerary.
Having Mirei on the ground in Tokyo means nothing gets lost in translation, literally or otherwise.
What sets David's itineraries apart is the direct, long-standing relationships built over decades with people on the ground — the staff of the Grand Hyatt Bangkok, trusted vendors at MBK, and connections across Bangkok's culinary world.
That network is what makes it possible to offer experiences and peace of mind that aren't available to the average traveler.
